Looking for ways to enjoy the great outdoors in White Lake?

Not only is now the perfect time to get outside because of current social distancing regulations, but it’s also ideal because August is here, and for many, this last full month of summer is the best time to take advantage of the outdoors. With plenty of sun, surf, and sand to go around, there’s no better place to spend your August getaway than White Lake!

Here are our top 6 favorite ways to get outside and have some Up North summer fun near Montague and Whitehall:

1. Biking the Hart-Montague Bike Trail

The William Field Memorial Hart-Montague Trail State Park (locally called the “rail trail”) is one of the oldest rails-to-trails parks in the state. Originally a train track, this fully-paved, linear state park features 22.6 miles of winding pathway for bikers, walkers, and joggers.

Hop on the trail at any point for a nature-filled excursion, featuring peaceful landscapes and beautiful views. Head here for an easy-to-download map. You’ll also find the trailhead to the Hart-Montague Trail right outside our door.

2. Kayaking on White River

Kayaking the White River can be a fabulous experience for couples, groups, and families. Slip into the current with a personal kayak, or go with someone else in a tandem kayak (both available from WaterDog Outfitters).

Offering many scenic views and plenty of glimpses at wildlife, White River is a great waterway for beginner to intermediate kayakers. The river empties into White Lake in close proximity to our lakefront hotel, and later empties into Lake Michigan. You can also canoe and fish along White River.

3. Stand-Up Paddleboarding on White Lake Waterways

Stand-up paddleboarding or “SUP” is a great way to get some exercise and spend time on the water. The sport is easy to learn, and you can paddleboard on a variety of waterways in the area. Paddleboard rentals are available right across the street from The Weathervane Inn at WaterDog Outfitters (more information below).

4. Walking the ArtWalk

For a more leisurely, laid-back outdoor adventure, take a stroll on The Arts Council of White Lake’s ArtWalk. Since 2005, the ACWL has been facilitating this quaint series of local art sculptures, which extend along the in-town portion of the Hart-Montague Trail and the Montague-Berry Junction Trail. Check out this map for more information about the trail and the sculptures you’ll find there.

5. Hiking & Canoeing at Clear Springs Nature Preserve

Just east of downtown Montague, on the other side of US-31, the Clear Springs Nature Preserve offers a pristine view of nature, ideal for hiking, jogging, canoeing, and more. Follow the trails at your leisure, take a canoe out on one of the small ponds, or bring a lunch for a fun family picnic in the out-of-doors.

6. Swimming & Exploring at Duck Lake State Park

Whether you like to swim, fish, hike, build sand dunes, or simply bask in the sun, a day at Duck Lake State Park is the perfect way to get outside. Within the 728-acre park, you’ll find the classic white sandy beaches along Lake Michigan, but you’ll also find unique sections of mature hardwood forest, open brush land, sand dune, and attractive meadowland.
