White Lake is just minutes away from one of the biggest winter sports facilities on the lakeshore: The Muskegon Winter Sports Complex.
Weather permitting, the complex is open every day, 10am to 10pm. It features facilities for everything from hockey, ice skating, and sledding to snowshoeing, cross country skiing, and luging.

What Activities Are Available at the Muskegon Winter Sports Complex?
Ice Skating
Come enjoy two acres of outdoor skating fun! Three types of ice skating are available at the complex:
- Family skating rink
- Hockey rink
- Lighted, ¼-mile skating trail
For those without hockey skates or figure skates, no problem! You can rent skates (from size 9 toddler shoes to size 14 men’s shoes). Pucks, helmets, and hockey sticks can also be rented. All skating facilities are open from 10am to 9:45pm, weather permitting.
Cross-Country Skiing
The Midwest’s longest lighted cross-country ski trail can be found at the Muskegon Winter Sports Complex. At 9.5 miles, the trail is long enough to get a great workout in while also enjoying the lovely white pine forest of Muskegon State Park.
New to cross-country skiing? No problem. For $50 per hour, the complex offers both group (up to 6 people) and individual skiing lessons. You can also rent skate skis, Fischer classic cross-country skis, poles, and ski boots.
Snowshoeing
If you’ve never snowshoed before, you’re in for a treat. This sport is simple to get the hang of and provides awesome fitness benefits, including a cardio workout and muscle-building, balance, agility, and endurance improvement.
There are three snowshoeing loops available at the complex: The Woods Loop, Lake Michigan Loop, and Lost Lake Trails. Each loop caters to a different ability level, so ask at the Lodge which one would suit you best. Those who don’t have snowshoes can rent shoes and poles at the complex.
Winter Luge
One of only four luge tracks in the country, The Muskegon Winter Sports Complex luge track is one of the biggest attractors to the facility. It is 850 feet long with two starting areas and six curves. It was designed by Frank Masley, three-time luge Olympian.
The track is open to both those who have participated in luging before and beginners and complete novices. In fact, the track was designed with the general public in mind. When luging for the first time, all equipment will be provided, and you’ll receive instruction and guidance from the skilled athletes on staff at the complex.

Sledding
If you have young children, the sledding area is something you won’t want to miss. Located right next to the skating area, the sledding hill is completely free to enjoy, though if you didn’t happen to bring a sled of your own from home, you’ll want to rent one for just $3 each.
How to Get to the Complex & State Park Registration Fees
The Muskegon Winter Sports Complex is located within Muskegon State Park, just 15 minutes off US-31 from Exit 116, heading west.
Those from Holland can simply head north on US-31. Travelers from Lansing, Flint, and Grand Rapids should take I-96 west to US-31 north. If you’re coming from Kalamazoo, hop on US-131 north to I-96 west and then to US-31 north.

Parking at the Complex
Because the facilities are located within the Muskegon State Park, the Michigan DNR requires that you have a Recreation Passport on your car in order to park.
If you’re from Grand Rapids, Lansing, Ann Arbor, etc., and have a Michigan-registered vehicle, you may have purchased such as a passport when you registered your car. Otherwise, Passports can be purchased at the Lodge when you arrive.
