Howmet Playhouse
At the center of the White Lake area’s performing arts scene is the histori Howmet Playhouse in Whitehall.
Located just two blocks from downtown Whitehall and only five minutes by car from our lakeside inn, the theatre offers everything from musicals and plays to films and poetry readings. There are also a number of youth theatre workshops hosted at the playhouse throughout the year.
Howmet Playhouse first opened its doors in 1916. At that time, the theatre put on live performances and showed some of the very first motion pictures or “flickers” as they were then called. Today, you can still see film screenings at the playhouse—many of which are free to attend or simply the cost of a donation. Both popular films and independent and documentary films are shown.
Of course, the main schedule of events at the theatre is made up of plays. The summer season always has an exceptionally good lineup of plays with the Summer Fine Arts Festival. The staff works diligently to bring in some of the best shows in the area, and patrons regularly come from Muskegon, Grand Rapids, and beyond to see these magnificent performances.
